Special thanks to my mother-in-law, Laurie, for modelling Arden for us! She and I are currently living together and she has been a great help to Helen’s Closet. In fact, she made all these samples herself as her second garment sewing project! Brava!
When we were designing Arden our goal was ‘sweat pants meets trousers’. The perfect pants pattern for just about anything, from wrangling kids to working from home to walks on the beach! We have been wearing Arden pretty much every day since the pattern was finalized and we can’t get enough.
View A of Arden is a high-rise elastic-waist pant with a classic hem that can be cuffed. Made in Tencel twill, this version of Arden could pass for trousers any day! We also LOVE this version in cotton jacquard. Paired here with a sneak peek of our next pattern, the Gilbert Top!
Views B and C of Arden really embody that ‘woven joggers’ look. They have the same fit as view A, but view B has a 3″ wide topstitched cuff. View C has a smaller cuff that can be topstitched or left plain.
Arden can be made in a wide range of fabrics, from lightweight cotton, rayon or linen to medium-weight cotton twill or jacquard. For our denim pair we used a cotton/hemp blend and our green pair below is made in 7oz linen.
We know the Arden Pants pattern will be a great pant for all seasons! We’ve got some blog posts coming up to show you how to sew Arden in knit fabrics (for the full sweatpants experience) and how to hack Arden into shorts for summer, too!
We hope you enjoy Arden as much as we do! We can’t wait to see what you make!

These look so great on Laurie, and she is such a great model for you! She looks like she could be your older sister. Love the pants, can’t wait to try them out.
Thank you!! I agree she is an amazing model! Thanks for checking out Arden!
I’m so excited to sew these pants! They’re exactly the style of comfortable, easy pants that I’ve been looking for. And now you’ve got me anxiously awaiting the Gilbert Top!!!
Thank you!! I’m so glad you like them! Yes, the Gilbert is on it’s way!! I am so excited to start making the final samples soon.
These are the perfect pants….and love that you’re going to show us how to make them in knits too. For summer, though, versions in linen and cotton and denim…oh my!!!
These are just what I need and I have some gently aged linen that would work wonderfully.
Thank you Helen for designing a casual woven pant pattern. It seems all the patterns currently are for stretch woven or knits. These will make a great summer pant in linen.
Thanks! I’m so glad you like them!
Can you please consider including some line drawings of the pattern?
Hi Sheila! Great point. There are line drawings in the pattern listing photographs and in the size booklet that is linked on the product page! Sorry, I missed including some here. I will try to do that for the next launch. Thanks for checking out Arden!
I have been waiting for your woven joggers since last fall! Finally. And doesn’t Laurie look amazing!
Thank you for your patience!! I agree, she looks stunning!
Ohhhhh I have a length of Tencel waving at me from my stash bin. Your Mum in law looks fantastic in these! Printing my copy off now 🙂
Perfect! Thank you!
Ok so firstly, your mother-in-law is a superb newbie model! Love all these pics. Now, this pattern looks like secret pajamas and we’re all #teamsecretpajamas over here.
Yes! These could 100% be made into ACTUAL pajamas, too! Thanks for checking out Arden!
I’m very excited to make these! Any suggestions of where to find 3″ wide elastic online in Canada?
Hi Jocelyn! I know that Blackbird Fabrics is going to stock some today or tomorrow! 😀
Thanks Helen! I ordered some… along with a lot of fabric 🙂
Thanks Jocelyn!
I love the photos of Laurie and the back drop of the beach. Perfect for showing off your Arden pants! Thanks!
I have made three pairs and love them!! Any chance of sharing a hack on how to make them into shorts? Thank you!
Thank you! I’m so glad you like the pattern. We have a tutorial coming up on this soon!
Hi Helen! I’ll get the pattern tonight as a birthday gift from my husband! *.* I need to pick fabric for it too, and I saw a viscose linen blend with 2% elastane. Do you think it’d be appropriate? I’m a beginner at garment making, so I’m unsure of how badly the stretch amount would affect the construction. Thank you!
Hi Naiani! What a cute gift! I’m excited for you to make Arden! If the fabric is a woven with a little bit of Elastane in it (which it sounds like it is) it will work fine for this pattern. If it is a knit (which it might be – it is hard for me to tell with that description) then it is not ideal. Arden is designed for woven fabrics. I hope that helps!
Helen, I love the Arden style and I’m very interested but nervous. This will be the first time I have sewn pants and, judging by RTW pants, I may need a flat seat adjustment. They look fabulous on Laurie. Regards, S
Hi Sandra! The first pair of pants is always a bit daunting, but an elastic waist fit is a great place to start! I’m confident you can make these pants and if you need a flat seat adjustment, you can do that, too! I believe in you 🙂
