I’m so excited to welcome my mom to the blog today to show off some of her recent Helen’s Closet makes! I may have twisted her arm just a little bit to get her to let me take these photos, but it was so worth it because look how great this outfit is!? Head to toe so cute and on-trend. Well done, mom!

This outfit is made up of our Arden Pants pattern (view A, no cuff) and our Cameron Button Up pattern (with a slightly modified sleeve). She made the pants in double gauze and she said they are so comfortable and she gets lots of compliments on them! I am really keen to make a double gauze pair for myself now, too!

She made the top in a rayon crepe which I just have to say, is NOT an easy fabric to sew a button up with! She said it was a bit challenging and she ended up not being happy with the sleeve plackets. Again, I blame the rayon crepe. She cut them off in a bit of a moment of frustration and ended up with elbow length sleeves that look super cute when rolled up! She plans to tack the roll in place so it doesn’t collapse and she can always wear it like this. I agree, it is so cute! Once again I would like to copy her.

I am teaching her how to do the french tuck with her shirts and she is getting more and more into it. Of course, french tucks aren’t for everybody but I do think it looks really great with this outfit. A full tuck would also look really cute.

In the background of these photos you can see my mom’s beautiful garden and the lovely archway that my dad built. You can also see their house (where I grew up). I’m wearing our Lawrence Dress in these photos. I aspire to have a garden as lush as my mom’s one day! Thank you, mom, for stopping by on the blog and for sewing my patterns!

  1. Love seeing you with your mum! She must be so proud of all you have accomplished and how you have inspired people all over the world to embrace sewing. Thank you for sharing!❤️

  2. You both look great! I absolutely love your Moms outfit. She looks so current and together. Your dress is gorgeous! And kudos to your Mother on her beautiful garden and your Father on the wonderful entryway arch. I definitely want to try your patterns.
Great pictures and a very lovely narrative of a sweet family. Thankyou for sharing, you made my morning!

  3. Mom looks awesome! Was the length and removal of the placket the only modification to the sleeve? It looks like maybe the shoulder was dropped a bit but I could be imagining it 🙂

    1. Thanks! I think that is looking that way due to the rayon crepe being loose, and she may have chosen a size larger than necessary.

  4. This is wonderful, very inspiring and stylish! Great idea for the sleeves, Mom! and a lovely garden.

  5. Great look for Mum, and good for her for stepping up to the plate to be photographed. She looks like a wonderful person! I do have a question about the Arden pants. Did she have to shorten the rise at all?

  6. New to sewing clothing. I have the Arden pattern, and it’ll be my first trouser make! I never would have thought to use double gauze. Inspiring! Thank you for sharing. Helen: such a beautiful dress!!

  7. You guys are too cute! I absolutely love this post, Helen! Beautiful mother and daughter. She did a beautiful job on both of those garments and I love the garden and archway. So picturesque and dreamy!

  8. Thank you for sharing Mum , it is hugely personal and she is adorable So good to see her encouraging your business and supporting you

  9. I have been wanting to tell you how much my mom is enjoying the Arden pants I’ve made for her, and just came across this blog post! I’ve been making them from Symphony Broadcloth as she loves the bright, pretty colors and they come out of the dryer looking great. I’ve made her four pairs and just bought fabric for three more. She’s 93 and loves the elastic waistband. Now I’m thinking it might be fun to branch out and make her some Cameron tops to go with them!
