BF Patterns Sabrina Skirt

Sabrina Skirt - BF Patterns - Helen's Closet

As soon as BF Patterns released the Sabrina Skirt I knew I wanted to make one. I am loving the dropped waist silhouettes that are everywhere this summer and I wanted to get in on the fun! This pattern is perfect for playing with this trend because it is easy to sew, easy to fit, and it has some really nice details like cute side ties and a lining option!

I chose to use a cotton block print from Blackbird Fabrics for this skirt. I skipped the lining but in hindsight, it would really benefit from one. The fabric is opaque enough for a gathered dress or skirt on its own, but it is super lightweight and I think for this style, a lining would really add to the feel of the skirt when worn. It doesn't help that it was super windy when we took these photos! The nice thing is that this skirt is really lightweight so it is really perfect for hot summer days. I like to wear bike shorts under my skirts and dresses, anyways!

I love the pockets and side tie details on this pattern. The ties are also a drawstring so you can use it to cinch in the waist and help hold up the skirt. I like having this option for when I have my heavy phone in my pocket.

I also love the way the dropped waist is curved. It swoops down at the sides and creates really pretty style lines. I think the placement of the waist is perfect and I didn’t make any changes to the pattern other than to add 1.5” (3.8 cm) to the length of the gathered skirt.

I feel like I’m really hitting on several fun summer trends with this make, all while still feeling very ‘me’. Light baby blue and dropped waists are both popular right now, and I’ve been seeing folks layering oversized button up shirts over long skirts. I especially love this look with big chunky sandals so I thought I would give it a try. The shirt is a Gap button up from the 90s that I recently scored in a thrift store. I love how the colour matches so perfectly!

I would definitely recommend this pattern. It’s a really fun and satisfying sew! I could see myself making another version in a heavier weight stripe for fall/winter. I like the idea of a longer skirt layered over tights and boots with a chunky sweater.
