Granger Bag Sewalong: Day 4 - Bag Lining
If you made the outer bag pocket for view B, this first step will be familiar to you. Place the inside pouch pocket lining in the middle of your inner pouch pocket, wrong sides facing. Fold in the corners and then the side edges twice, creating a mitred corner. Sew two lines of stitching along one long edge of the pocket. Center your pocket on the right side of one of your bag lining pieces (the piece without the zipper box markings). Place it 3 3/8" from the top of the lining. Sew it on using two lines of stitching. Next, we need to decide where to sew the dividing line on the pocket. You can also skip this step if you like the pocket as is. I like to place my phone inside to make sure it will fit snuggly in one side of the pouch. Once decided, sew two lines of stitching to match the outer edges. With right sides together, place the sipper pocket on top of the other bag lining piece, lining up the zipper box markings. Pin and sew along the stitch guides (just the outer box). Once stitched, we need to cut the zipper box opening. Fold your fabric to start your cut and then cut along the center line, stopping at either end where the markings split into a Y shape. Cut the Y shape into the corners, as close as you can get to the stitches without cutting through. Feed the zipper pocket lining through the zipper box hole and flatten it out on the other side. Your zipper box will look quite pillowy at this point, but after a carful pressing, it should be a perfect rectangle. If you have puckers in the corners, you need to cut closer to the stitch line on the Y markings. Pin the zipper in place and sew about 1/8" away from the zipper box edge. Go slowly and move the zipper pull from one side of the zip to the other as needed. You may want to switch to a zipper foot for this step. Fold the zipper pocket lining up onto itself and pin together the three open sides. Sew them together using two lines of stitching, being sure not to sew the pocket onto the lining. Trim off the excess seam allowance. You now have two complete lining sides! Place them right sides together and pin along the sides and bottom. Sew using a 5/8" (1.5cm) seam allowance and trim off the excess. Next, we are going to square the bag lining corners the same way we did the outer bag corners in step 3 of the sewalong. Match the bottom seam up with the side seam to create two triangles. Sew a 5cm line of stitching to create each corner. Trim off the excess. Turn the bag lining top down 5/8" (1.5cm) and press. Push the side seam the same direction you did on the bottom corner for each side. That's all for the bag lining! Congrats on making it this far in the sewalong, next we will be putting the lining and bag together! Share your progress on Instagram using the hashtag #grangerbag :)
