I’ve got a special blog post so share today! My dad has made me some incredible things for my sewing room, including this handmade sewing chest that we shared a while back. Today I want to share something he made for me recently—this little thread spool holder!
This is based on a vintage thread spool holder design. Below is a photo of the inspiration pic he used from a book called Measured Drawings of Shaker Furniture and Woodenware, by Ejner Handberg, 1980. My dad was inspired to try making it because he recently got a mini lathe and so he was keen to try turning some pieces. He turned the center spindle and the little bowl on top. The woods used were cherry and mahogany.
The base of the thread spool holder is an old base from a music box. He repurposed it by adding the thread holders all around the base and attaching the centre spindle to the music box. Yes, it still works! If you spin the center spindle, it turns around and around and plays a French song: Sur le pont d’Avignon.
You can place your thread spools around the outside of the spindle and put your pin cushion on top. These thread spool holders would often have the cushion secured on the top so that is an option, too. The design is so cute and I just love the music element. Genius!
Big shout out to my dad for making this amazing sewing room project. He is so creative and good at just trying new things and seeing what happens. Thank you, dad!! I love it.
