One of my summer sewing goals this year is to make Sam some more Camerons! He loves this pattern and it makes me really happy to see him wearing them. Sometimes it can be hard to motivate myself to sew for others, but when it comes to sewing the Cameron Button Up for Sam, I know we’ve got the fit nailed down and that he will wear it constantly. Total win!
For this Cameron I chose a handwoven cotton from Blackbird Fabrics that I purchased a while back. This may be one of my favourite fabrics EVER. That feels like a bold statement but I mean, come on, how beautiful is this fabric!? The rich blue colour is absolutely stunning and the white hashtag-esque design is so cool. I had been saving this fabric for a special project for myself but could not think of the perfect make, and then it hit me, this would look so good on Sam!
I made the short sleeved view of Cameron because I didn’t have enough fabric for long sleeves (Sam’s usual preference). We are both super pleased with how it turned out! The short sleeves suits the fabric and it makes for a really fun summer vibe.
For pattern matching, I used the lines we provide on the Cameron pattern to get a match across the front placket, and I tried to keep the print lined up horizontally at the side seams. I also opted to match the front pocket to make it almost invisible. That is a really fun sewing task for me; I find it so satisfying. I didn’t have enough fabric to perfectly match the back yoke but I’m pleased with it nonetheless. Perfection doesn’t exist in sewing!
Since I completed this project, Sam has been wearing this shirt every chance he gets. First thing out of the washing machine without fail. I’m so glad I chose to use one of my favourite fabrics for this project because now I get to admire it all the time!
Cameron is a great sewing project for yourself or for others. I love sewing button up shirts because the steps are meditative and I usually work with cotton (which is the best fabric to sew). Once you’ve made a few button ups it is really easy to whip up more and it’s such a great wardrobe staple. I’ve got a few more Camerons for Sam lined up so expect to see more posts coming soon!
