Pattern Description

The Holmes Dress is a relaxed and stylish throw-on-and-go dress for everyday wear. Comfortable, classic, and endlessly wearable. With a deep V-neck, a button-front bodice, and short sleeves, Holmes is perfect for warm weather but it also layers beautifully with leggings and sweaters. Holmes features a gently cinched drawstring waist—pull the ties snug to add shaping, or loosen them for an effortless, laid-back fit.

The skirt is finished with a playful ruffle hem for movement and a touch of charm, and deep pockets make it as practical as it is cute. Make View A for a longer, swishier silhouette or choose View B for a breezy, shorter dress. We promise you’ll love living the Holmes Dress life!

Sizing and Adjustments
The Holmes Dress comes in sizes 0-34 (from a 33” to 62” hip). Two PDF patterns are provided with different size charts. The first is range 0-22 based on a B-cup block. The second is range 12-34 based on a D-cup block. There is an overlap from sizes 12-22 where you can choose which size range you would like to use.

The pattern instructions include guidance on choosing a size and making basic alterations to the length of the pattern. We have also included instructions on how to raise the neckline if desired.

Fabric Recommendations
Holmes works best in light to medium weight woven fabrics with no stretch. We recommend fabrics under 7.5 oz (250 gsm). Rayon/viscose challis or poplin, linen, cotton, and Tencel will work well. Structured fabric will have more dramatic volume and drapier fabrics will have more fluid movement.

We used 7oz linen for my green dress and a light weight cotton block print for my purple dress. The blue floral dress is a rayon twill with lovely drape.

We will be sharing more about our Community Models later this week. They all used unique fabrics, too! From left to right we have Shirley in multiple blockprinted cottons, Basma in soft-washed linen, and Delaney in a striped cotton poplin.

Mix and Match with Lazo
The Holmes bodice features the same partial drawstring casing as the Lazo Jumpsuit. We love this finish because the waist is adjustable to suit your personal preferences. The waist size is identical across both of these patterns so you can put the Lazo bodice on the Holmes skirt and the Holmes bodice on the Lazo pants/shorts for 4 more views!

We have created a free crossover booklet for you here. Download this instruction booklet to get all the information you need about fabric requirements and construction for these additional 4 views.

We made the Holmes bodice and Lazo pants view in denim and we are loving this look! We also tried the Lazo bodice with the longer Holmes skirt and created our dream summer dress. Truly the possibilities are endless!

Styling and Wearing Holmes
Holmes is designed to be endlessly wearable. It works great as a casual dress for everyday wear, whether it is to the office or to a lunch with friends. It can also be made fancy in dressy fabrics and with more formal styling. It’s a great date night dress but it doubles as a lounge-around-the-house dress. What more could you ask for!?
