Behind the names Tofino and Ukee
Tofino (tuh-fee-no) and Ukee (you-key) are both named after places in Clayoquot Sound here on Vancouver Island where I live. Ukee is a local nickname for Ucluelet. We love visiting both of these places whenever we can, they are incredibly beautiful and near and dear to my heart. I think these two new patterns suit the laid-back surfing culture on the peninsula! We also always enjoy the most beautiful sunsets on the beaches there, and we were inspired by the colours and natural beauty for our pattern samples!

The Tofino Top
The Tofino Top is an oversized, loose-fitting woven shirt with a relaxed silhouette and laid-back vibe. It features a classic camp collar, dropped shoulders, and a button-up front. Tofino does not have chest darts or bust shaping. View A is hip length, while View B is cropped. Both views feature short sleeves and a wide back yoke for a bold, boxy look. Designed for light to medium-weight wovens like rayon, linen, and cotton, the Tofino Top is the perfect balance of comfort and cool.
The Tofino Top comes in sizes 0-34 (31” - 60” chest).

The Ukee Shorts
The Ukee Shorts are mid-rise, pull on shorts with three length options. View A is a longline short with cargo pockets, View B hits mid-thigh, and View C is a breezy short length. All views feature a comfortable elastic waistband with a drawstring, slanted front pockets, and back patch pockets. The Ukee Shorts include a faux fly for a casual, laid-back look. Designed for light to medium weight wovens like cotton poplin, twill, or linen, these shorts are the perfect blend of ease and utility. Whether you’re heading to the beach or the backyard, the Ukee Shorts will be your go-to all summer long.
The Ukee Shorts come in sizes 0-34 (33” - 62” hip).

Recommended Fabrics
One of the best things about these two new patterns is that you can make a fun matching set! You can use the same fabric for both designs. If making a matching set, we recommend making view B or C of Ukee (the two shorter lengths) because view A (the cargo shorts) work best in a medium-weight fabric. Tofino works best in a lighter weight fabric, so it is best to go with a light weight for your matching set.

The Tofino Top works beautifully in flowy rayons and lightweight cottons or linens. Rayon challis, cotton lawn or batiste, and softened linen or linen blends work best. If you choose a more structured cotton or linen, the shirt will have a boxier look. If you go with a flowy fabric, it will have more drape and fluidity. See the difference between a rayon (left) and cotton (right) below.

The Ukee Shorts work best in light to medium weight cotton or linen. They can also be made in a drapier fabric like rayon, but keep in mind that they won’t be as durable. View A (the cargo shorts) work best in a fabric with some structure. We recommend 5-7 oz cotton. See an example below of a 5 oz cotton (left) and a 7oz cotton (right).

About the Fit
The Tofino Top has an oversized, relaxed fit. It has generous ease through the body and the arms. It is designed to feel breezy and casual. If you make it in structured fabric it has a boxier look. You can size down if you are looking for a less oversized look, or choose a drapey fabric to de-emphasize the volume. Tofino does not have any bust shaping. It is designed to be gender inclusive and work well for everyone!

Tofino offers two views, a standard shirt length and a cropped top. Tofino is a similar style to our popular Gilbert Top! Over the years we have had many requests for a ‘mens Gilbert’ and I have always loved the idea of having another version of this classic style. Tofino has a looser fit and no bust shaping. Gilbert has the front tie and a long bell sleeve option. Both are great patterns and we’re excited to have more options for this style in the collection!

The Ukee Shorts are also casual but they are less oversized. The waistband is designed to be able to pull over the hips, and the ease is just right for shorts. Not too tight, but not too voluminous either. If you like a little more room in your shorts, size up. The mid-rise is lower than we usually draft for, but we are loving this new look! If you prefer a higher or lower rise, you can adjust it to your liking. As always, we include the rise measurements in the finished garment measurements chart so you can compare them with your other favourite clothing and patterns!

Ukee is a gender inclusive pattern. It has a similar back crotch curve as our Arden Pants and June pants but it has a deeper front crotch curve and a lower rise. The shorts have a relaxed fit and an elastic waist so they work well for everybody.
Ukee offers three shorts lengths. The shortest shorts have a 3” (7.5 cm) inseam, the mid-length shorts have a 5” (13 cm) inseam, and the longer shorts have a 10” (25.5 cm) inseam as well as the additional cargo pockets.

Sewing Tofino & Ukee
Both of these patterns are listed as “advanced beginner”. They are both easy to sew and relatively quick to complete. The Tofino Top uses the burrito method for the back yoke and has a nice, clean, topstitched front facing. Buttonholes and buttons are required.

The Ukee Shorts have plenty of fun details, all of which are very doable. The front pockets, back pockets, and optional cargo shorts (view A) are all neat to construct. There is also a faux fly front and an optional drawstring waist. This is a great project for leveling up your edgestitching and topstitching skills!
As always, we have very robust instruction booklets for both of these designs!

Thank you for checking out these two new patterns! I hope you give them a try and feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have. We will be sharing more versions of these new designs over here on the blog and on Instagram this week!
