Thank you for all the love for the Gilbert Top so far! I am so excited to see your Gilberts in my feed soon. Today I wanted to share a really fun version of this pattern that you can make in addition to the two main views provided. One of my fav things about this pattern is that you can mix and match the views to create lots of looks! I have more Gilbert pattern view ideas below.
This top I am sharing today combines the dramatic sleeves of view B with the tie front of view A. I love how summery this looks in a lovely striped linen from Blackbird Fabrics. I’ve paired it with my Arden Shorts, too!
All you need to do to get this look is cut the view A hem with the tie and the view B sleeve. Easy-peasy! I can see myself wearing this shirt a lot this summer.
Other Gilbert Top view mashup ideas you can try include:
- The longer hem of view B with the short sleeve of view A
- View A with no front tie (using the hem method for view B)
I hope you like this dreamy linen look! Let me know if you have any questions about our new Gilbert Top.

I think the long sleeves would also be cute gathered at the hem to make a gathered cuff. Did you or any of your testers try that?
This is a fab idea! I am excited to do a hack post about this eventually. I think gathering with elastic would work great or alternatively sewing a bias strip to gather would be really pretty also!
I hope you do this as that was my first thought with the long sleeve version on the gathering. But I don’t love the feel of elastic around my wrist so would love to see how it would be done with the bias strip.
Ha, just read my own comment and realized I left out an important part — gathering the hem with narrow eleastic!
Hi Helen, I’m thinking about lengthening View A and adding a fourth buttonhole so that the top will hit just below high hip. What do you think?
Hi Elisa! I think this would work really well! We did this version here with no tie and a fourth button: https://helensclosetpatterns.com/2020/08/04/cropped-gilbert-with-no-tie/
It has not been lengthened at all, but it would be easy to do! You could go somewhere in between view A and B.
