The Ultimate List of Online Indie Fabric Stores in Canada

Today we’re very excited to share the ultimate list of fabric stores in Canada! Originally compiled by @peachysewist for her former blog, I was honored when she reached out and offered to let us take over the post in her stead. This is such an amazing resource for fellow Canadian sewists, filled with amazing local shops. Enjoy!

The Ultimate List of Canadian Fabric Stores

As a child, I used to tag along with my mom when she went to Fabricland. I’d feel each fabric with my hands and be in awe of all the different colours, patterns, and textures. The prices were good, the employees relatively friendly and interested in your projects, and the entire place had almost any tool or notion you could want. When I started sewing in a few years ago, the only fabric store I really knew of was Fabricland and I’d bus all the way out to the store whenever I got the chance. I then found out about the online sewing community and was introduced to a whole new world of smaller fabric shops, knowing that the quality of each product and the overall care and love in those stores far surpassed any big retailer I was shopping at. In smaller retail environments, employees ask you what you’re working on and are incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to projects.

I wanted to put together a list of Canadian online shops because it’s not always easy to search these places, and I’ve been absolutely eaten alive by international import duties, international shipping, and conversion rates. I once purchased some fabric from a great fabric store in the USA and had to pay over $150 in duties and shipping. It was nightmarish, especially when you’re already bought a few hundred dollars of fabric and all you want to do is support these small businesses. @peachysewist

  1. The Makehouse in Victoria offers online shopping as well! Wanted to shout them out for being so great when I visited this summer ❤️

  2. There is an adorable fabric shop in St. Andrew’s, NB, that also has a great online presence called The Wee Fabric Shop. Lynn mostly carries quilting materials and is a Janome authorized retailer, but has also been branching out to offer a larger variety of offerings. She’s the best!

  3. Stache Fabric & Notions – not my website but a store I love with knowledgeable staff and an awesome selection of fabric – some classes too! In London Ontario and on line.

  4. I wanted to add Out of Hand in Calgary to your list. It sells a wonderful collection of quilting fabrics and garment/dressmaking fabrics along with any sewing notion you can think of. Their quilting fabrics are online but I don’t believe their garment making fabrics are on their website but you can phone and place an order.

  5. What a great list! We’d love to be included – Piece Fabric Co. is in Alberta with both an online and retail space. We love to help people find the perfect apparel and quilting fabric, whether that’s in person or online. We carry a great selection of fabric, patterns, and notions; and ship within 1-2 business days. Find us at PieceFabric.co. Thanks so much!

  6. Another shop to add to the list: Sew Sisters Quilt Shop! Based in Toronto and mostly quilting fabric but theres often extra gems in store. Very affordable as well.

  7. Hi! Love the list but it was missing a few of my favorite Canadian shops so wanted to give them a shoutout here – Fabric and Flow, Brightside Fabric Co, Wild Ivy Supply Co, Prairie Love Knits, and Emmaline Bags Inc 🙂

  8. Daily Like Canada , beautiful fabrics from the Daily Like brand and The Spool Sewing Studio in Courtenay BC

  9. Hi Helen! The Common Thread would love to be added to your list! We are a small (but growing) online fabric shop based in Ontario. We mostly cater to the modern quilter but some fun garment fabrics are making their way into the mix as well!

  10. In Montréal (Québec) : Tissu Social, and Tissus Ronald Asselin. In Sorel-Tracy (Québec) : Textiles Raymond Parent.

    1. Thanks Linda! We’re only adding online shops to this list, but these are great suggestions for other sewists who may be local. 🙂

  11. Another relatively new, high quality, Western Canadian on-line fabric store worth a look is Former & Latter! https://formerlatterfabrics.ca/ They are garment specific, with no quilting cottons in the mix. Last winter, I got some absolutely gorgeous bottom-weight stretch cotton twill – I was so pleased with the quality of the fabric!

  12. How can I possibly thank you enough for this list! I struggle all the time trying to google fabric stores in Canada and now all I have to do is bookmark this list. I’ve already filled up a few carts at various places hahaha…..

  13. Thank you so much for mentioning Bibs and Boots Fabric! We strive to offer sustainable fabrics to home sewists. Quality fabrics that before were not attainable now can be had in Canada! We are excited to bring them to you!

  14. These lists are great and I love them! Your list of where to have large format sewing patterns printed was awesome and I am so happy with the service I chose. I am a big supporter of Canadian and, particularly, local businesses. However, many products are still sourced offshore from jurisdictions with horrendous human rights and environmental practices. I do as much research as possible before a purchase.

  15. I just opened a small online fabric store a few weeks ago: Anthropocene Fabrics (anthropocenefabrics.com). We curate a small selection of fabrics with an emphasis on sustainability and release each collection with capsule pattern suggestions.

  16. What a wonderful resource! Here is another: A threaded Needle featuring supplies for hand stitching (sashiko, boro, visible mending) and dyed yarn Japanese cotton fabrics (quilting, applique, clothing). Located in BC

  17. Hi I have a couple others I personally use & would recommend – HaloFabricAddicts (mostly athletic type fabric)BC & FabCycle (deadstock textile waste recycler)BC

  18. This is a great list! Thank you so much for compiling it. I keep a list of resources on my blog and will add a big link to your list as it’s much more expansive.

It’s Thanksgiving weekend and I’m grateful that all of these Canadian companies exist so we don’t need to look south for our fabric, patterns, notions and inspiration!

  19. Thank you so much for the time spent in listing these stores…I am looking forrwad to viewing them on line.

  20. Studio 39 Fabrics is a great online fabric store shipping from southern Alberta. A large variety of designer quilting cottons, flannel, and linen fabrics along with wide back fabrics. Priced by the quarter yard.

  21. Thank you for this wonderful list of Canadian online fabric stores. Such a valuable tool to have! I have gradually been building my similar list over the past several years.
I don’t think I saw Peak Fabrics on your list. I think they are based in Calgary. They specialize in technical fabrics. Super helpful staff and an ever changing range of products. They sell a lot of end of line fabrics so sometimes the quantities are limited. There prices are very competitive and delivery is fast. I think it would be well worth your while to have a chat with this lovely company owner to see for yourself if this would be a good fit for your list.
    Cheers,
    Kim

  22. ABQ in Strathroy ON should be on this list. They have a vast selection of fabrics which includes garment quality fabrics. They sell sewing machines, sergers, embroidery machines and long arm machines. Also offered is repair to the above listed machines. They also have a great variety of classes.

  23. Chitter Chatter Fabrics, the coziest quilt shop in farmhouse basement in Abbotsford, BC has a truly fantastic selection of quilting cotton and FREE Canada-wide shipping! It is so wonderful to be able to support Canadian small businesses. Fabric people are the best.
    https://www.chitterchatterfabrics.com/

  24. Thank you for putting this wonderful list together. Sunshine and Peony Fabrics in Caledon would also like to be added to this list. We are an online shop that currently has a small retail space open by appointment. We love to have our customers visit and anyone who visits usually comes back for more. We will be turning 3 in July 2023! Happy Sewing!!

  25. I would add C & M Textiles in Ottawa and Montreal to the list. the Ottawa store has a great selection of home dec/drapery fabrics and notions, but I get my garment fabrics there. They carry a traditional mix of garment making fabrics—knits, cottons, special events, linen, silks, fine wools, coatings, linings etc. also worth mentioning, that they have lots of fabrics for making skating costumes.
