One of my favourite parts of sewing is a fabric+pattern match made in heaven. Making such a match is hard! It can be difficult to predict the result and sometimes it happens without even trying. That is the case with this make here. We’ve been sewing up samples for our upcoming jeans pattern (coming very soon!) and I wanted some Gilbert Tops for the shoot. I got our sample sewer to make this rayon Gilbert one on a whim and I am in love with the result!
This is our Gilbert Top pattern, view A for the sleeves and view B for the hem (a little longer, and no front tie). I’ve seen a lot of people opt for this combination of the views and I can see why! It’s a very versatile top, easy to style for lots of looks.
I chose a viscose poplin from Blackbird Fabrics for this make. I love Gilbert in a rayon, It’s so lovely in a drapey fabric like this! Viscose poplin has a cool hand and it makes for a really breezy top. I love the bright pops of colour in this print. The yellow and red flowers really stand out against the lavender background.
This Gilbert is also oversized. I usually wear a 16-D in our top patterns and this one is a 20-B. I wanted a looser fit with this fabric so it had a tropical dad-shirt vibe. Using the B-cup range ensured there wasn't a ton of excess fabric at the bust.
We used tortoiseshell-style buttons on this fabric and did opt to sew the chest pocket even though it does blend in quite a lot with the print. I still think it looks cute! I love a chest pocket. My sample sewer did an amazing job sewing up this Gilbert in this rayon fabric. I am so happy with the final result!
