Button ups are one of my favourite sewing projects! I love sewing with cotton because it presses well and it never puts up a fuss. Flannel is the coziest of all cotton fabrics so it feels extra special and luxurious to sew and to wear. This flannel in particular has been in my stash for a few years now and it is finally fulfilling its destiny to become a Cameron Button Up!
The Cameron Button Up is on sale this weekend for 25% off! No code required. Sale ends February 16th, 2026.

Did you know that Cameron is one of our best selling patterns? I think it is because it has a great fit, it works well for all genders, and the instructions are really detailed. You don’t have to worry about whether or not you can pull off a collar stand or a sleeve placket— we’ve got you! We walk you through every single step to ensure success.

For my new Cameron Button Up, I decided to make a couple of tweaks. First, I made Sam’s size. I wanted this Cameron to feel more like a shacket, so I needed it to fit a bit bigger and longer. Sam wears a size 24 shoulder graded to an 18 hip and we add 5” (12.7 cm) of length for his height. I pretty much made his pattern as-is. I took a little length off his sleeves and I reduced the hip grading. It ended up being closer to a straight 24 with added length. I usually would wear a size 20.

The other change I made was to sew two pockets on the chest instead of one. I also made the pockets 1/2” (1.3 cm) larger on all sides. I wanted them to feel oversized to match the oversized feel of the shirt. I really like this scale for the pockets!

Because this is a checkered flannel I was able to pattern match the button placket and the side seams. We include instructions for how to pattern match in the booklet! I love how satisfyingly seamless the sides are.

I also cut the back yoke and the pockets on the bias so that they stood out more and broke up the plaid pattern a bit. I always do this on shirts and I really like the look.

For the buttons I went with a larger size and spaced them out a bit more than usual to get that shacket look. Button size can make a huge difference! If I had put smaller shirt buttons on this it may have looked like an ill-fitting button up shirt. With these bold blue buttons it feels more like outerwear.

I love how this project turned out! I made a black and white flannel Cameron a few years ago and I still love it, but it sadly has shrunk the wash. The arms are a bit too short and the body feels a bit too tight. It is still wearable but it’s not the cozy layering piece it once was. This new Cameron is going to be my go-to for cooler spring days because I love wearing a flannel shirt under my rain jacket.
