We’ve got an episode of the Love to Sew Podcast coming out this week all about sewing fashion trends! Caroline and I each chose a fashion trend from this article and we got together on the pod to show each other our makes! I chose “Bad Romance” and I made this cool black eyelet top.

My trend: Bad Romance. It toes the line between darkness and delicacy, offering looks that blend gothic styling with the sort of romantic visuals you usually only see in period dramas.

I chose to make the Rothwell Top by Stitch Witch Patterns. I really love the look of this top with the points in the front and the ties in the back. I had the perfect eyelet fabric for this project and I knew it would match the trend well.

I did three muslins to get the fit perfect on this top and I’m glad I did! There is nothing quite so satisfying as nailing the fit, is there? I needed to give myself more room in the arm openings and increase the coverage on the back pieces to fit my body, as well as move the darts to match my bust. It was worth the effort!

For the fabric, I used this cool grid eyelet and I underlined it with a skin-tone match cotton. I just used quilting cotton. I also used quilting cotton for the black lining on the vest. There are three layers of fabric total and It makes it really nice and structured! I am able to wear this top without a bra, but I do need somebody to help tie me into it.

I’m so happy with this make! It is a great little top for a date night dinner or going out to the bar with friends. I love the fit and the eyelet is so gorgeous! I have more of this fabric so I’ll see what else I can make. Head over to the Love to Sew Podcast to hear more about this make and to see what trend Caroline chose!
