I love sewing for summer and swimwear is one of my favourite things to make. As somebody who really enjoys swimming, beaching, and all things water-related, I get a lot of use out of my suits. I also need to be very cautious in the full sun because this girlie burns instantly! For that reason, beach layering is essential.

Today I want to share a recent summer make—this cotton Cameron Button Up! I saw this beautiful batik quilting cotton at my local Fabricland and immediately knew I wanted a shirt. It’s pretty unusual for me to buy a fabric and go home and get started on the project right away but this time, I did just that! I was so excited and I had such a clear vision, it motivated me to keep going and get this project done.
For this Cameron, I sized up two sizes to a 22 (I usually wear an 18). And I lengthened the hem 4” (10 cm). This gives the shirt an oversized layering feel. Other than that, I made no changes. Cameron has become one of my favourite patterns to sew! The body comes together really fast (front, back, sleeves) and then there are fun details like the sleeve placket and collar. These can be fiddly to sew, but if you are working with a nice stable cotton like this batik—it feels quite dreamy!
The cherry on top of this shirt is the buttons. Check out these cute little flowers! They are yellow and they are clear so they show off the colours in the batik button up really well.
It just so happens that we had made a Sunstar sample in this royal blue fabric that really pops with this shirt. I love the combination! I think Sunstar works great in a print or a solid, and it’s nice to have a simple one-colour version in my collection. It also works well as a mix-and match suit if I want to pair the top and/or bottom with another swimsuit.
