Thank you so much for the warm reception to the Brooks Jeans pattern! I am so excited to see all of your makes. We obviously had denim in mind for this pattern, but we wanted to make sure it worked in corduroy, too! We love a good cozy cord and any excuse to sew with this fun fabric.

Get the Brooks Jeans

For this make, we used a fine cotton corduroy from Blackbird Fabrics in the colour “pickle”. This is a non-stretch cord and it weighs in at 9oz. We recommend fabrics from 9-13oz for this pattern, so this is on the lighter end. This cord has no stretch but if you want to use a cord with stretch, I think that would work well too. You may want to size down if it is really stretchy.

You want to be careful when cutting out your Brooks Jeans because corduroy has a nap. Be sure to cut all pieces with the nap going the same direction for best results! Corduroy also requires a little extra TLC while sewing so you don’t crush or burn the fabric. Use a lower heat on your iron and press on a needle board. If you don’t have a needle board, pressing on top of a towel helps.

Other than a little extra caution, sewing a corduroy pair of Brooks is straightforward. No changes need to be made to the pattern. I think a matching topstitching thread looks best for cord, but you can go with a contrast thread for even more visual interest. I find this pair of Brooks Jeans to be my most comfortable pair! This fabric is so soft and cozy—it’s perfect for fall!

We chose a fun floral print for the pocket bags and I love this little pop of colour!

I styled Brooks here with a short sleeved Cameron Button Up. It is made in Warp and Weft cotton and it is one of my favourite shirts. It is comfortable but has a bit of a preppy vibe. I love the texture on this fabric, too. Even Emma approves of this outfit!
