Launch week wouldn't be complete without a pattern hack! This is one design idea that didn’t make it into the collection views but I still think is an excellent alternative for the Ruby Overalls—a Ruby Pinafore! Follow along to see how I made this simple overalls pinafore hack. Spoiler alert—I love it!
This pattern hack is fairly straightforward but it does involve some pattern alteration. Essentially, we want to remove the crotch curve from the Ruby legs so we can join them together as a skirt, instead! Here is how that looks on the front and back pieces:
The length you make your Ruby Pinafore is up to you. I decided to make mine 32” (81.3 cm) from the top of the bib. I am 5’9” (175.3 cm) tall. If you want a really long Ruby Pinafore, you will want to consider adding a slit or kick pleat so you can move more easily. Alternatively, you can also flare out the sides of your pattern to make a more A-line shape.
Once you’ve adjusted your pattern, the rest is easy! Simply follow the Ruby instructions except for sewing the crotch and inseam. You will instead join the fronts and backs together from the bib to the hem and topstitch.
I opted for overalls hardware on my Ruby Pinafore and I love the look! This fabric is 6oz “Everyday Linen” from Blackbird Fabrics in the colour ‘elmwood’. It is an ideal weight for this pattern and I would recommend it highly.
