Sometimes it’s fun to make summer clothes in the winter, just so you can dream of those warm days when you’ll be wearing them again!  It can be difficult to resist all the summer indie patterns from Australia, and I totally caved when I saw the new Kate Top from Tessuti patterns.

     

I’ve been wanting to get a basic tank top pattern for a while, and I eventually went for the Kate because it has both high and low neckline options, and I love the way the bottom of the tank is finished with the side split hem.

For my first Kate, I made the pattern as-is, except that I turned my bias binding edges in because I messed them up, lol.  Next time I will get them right because I really like this design detail!  No harm done since I used a fabric scrap to make this top, and it still turned out pretty cute.

As I mentioned above, the split hem on this top is really lovely.  It folds in all the edges on the inside, which is ideal for a serger-less sewer like myself.  I had never constructed a hem like this before but it was super intuitive and the results are so cool!  It is especially easy when you use a fabric that presses nicely like cotton.

I made a size 16 in this top, and I think I’ll go down to a 14 for my next version.  I do like how boxy and loose it is though, it will be a great summer tank top.  I also might lengthen the shirt a bit when I make the view with the higher neckline.
