Happy New Year! I’m really excited to see what 2024 brings over here at Helen’s Closet. We’ve got lots of fun patterns in the works and I will also be continuing to pursue my quilting passion over at Cedar Quilt Co! I have a fun blog post to kick things off this year—a Cameron Button Up for my partner, Sam.
I know I’m not the only one who purchases fabric with projects in mind for my partner and doesn't follow through. It’s always so fun to dream about making things for yourself or for others, and sometimes it can take a while before it actually happens. I’m here to say that’s OK! I purchased this fabric 4 years ago and I’m only getting around to making this shirt now. It feels good to finally make it happen and Sam is always happy to have handmade clothes, no matter the timeline.
This is a classic PNW look. The lumberjack vibes are on point with this shirt! I think most of the people I know own a red and black buffalo plaid check shirt, which is interesting because it’s not exactly a neutral! I even own one myself from back in the day. I think somehow this plaid has come be to associated with a standard capsule wardrobe, especially around these parts of BC. I can see the appeal, it just looks great on everyone!
I used a super snuggly mammoth flannel for this shirt so it is extra cozy. It makes a great layering piece and Sam can wear this as a light jacket (which is usually enough for him). It also looks great buttoned up! I ended up using shiny black buttons because it was all I could find but I think the shine adds a little something to the overall look. I also pattern matched across the front and sides following our tips in the instruction booklet.
I chose to do two pockets on this version, and I cut the pockets and back yoke on the bias. I think this looks really great with any plaid and it saves you from worrying about pattern matching on the yoke—win/win!
Sam modelled the Cameron and it has become his favourite shirt to wear. I love that I can keep making him new versions and there is so much variety in the fabric we can choose! This pattern has become a favourite in the sewing community, too. We’ve seen so many versions for sewists and for their loved ones. Keep up the Cameron-ing!
