When we first started working on the Falconer Pants pattern, we were calling them “jeans”. As we developed the views and the features, the design was so different from classic jeans that we decided to name them “pants” to encourage people to sew them up in other bottom weight fabrics like cotton twill and canvas. With that said, they look fantastic in denim and I can’t wait to show you!

I’ve been so excited to make myself the ultimate barrel leg jeans using the Falconer Pants pattern. I got two light wash denims from Blackbird Fabrics so I could try them both out in this design! These are the denims I used:
-
Light wash: 13oz Premium Non-Stretch Organic Cotton Denim - Light Indigo
-
Medium wash: 10oz Non-Stretch Laundered Denim - Medium Indigo
I love that the Falconer Pants offer a nod to the barrel leg trend without being too much. I love a good pants trend but as we all know, trends come and go. Next season the extreme barrel shape may not be “cool” any longer. I think the subtle barrel shape we achieved with Falconer offers the ability to partake in this trend and still make something that will be stylish for many years to come.
I sewed up the lighter wash first, and although this fabric is 13oz, it is also softened and treated, so it wasn’t as heavy as it sounds. I made my size (20). I am really pleased with the fit and I love this ultra light wash. It goes effortlessly with so many tops!
I made the medium wash pair second, and as a small tweak, I took the seams in ever so slightly at the side leg panels in the hip area. This helped to cinch it in slightly and I am even more happy with the fit on this pair. They are fresh out of the wash so they are tight, but I know after wearing them a bit they will loosen up and be perfect.
When it comes to fitting Falconer, we have a place in the instructions where we indicate that it is a good time to do a “baste fit”. This is optional, but it allows you the opportunity to check the fit and take the pants in or out at some or all of the seams. I think it is worth the extra effort and a little goes a long way when it comes to adjusting seams on pants!
I can’t wait to get these into my daily rotation in my closet! They are both super comfortable and they feel so stylish. I also love how they pair with the top patterns we have in the Helen’s Closet collection! I’m wearing them here with a new Reynolds Top that I made recently.
I still want to make more denim Falconer Pants! I have some vintage black denim that might be perfect for the wide leg view. I’d also like to try them in stretch denim! In that case, I will size down and definitely utilize that baste fitting opportunity. I also have a bunch of denim fabric scraps that would be really fun to play with, sewing up some patchwork for those side panels.
