I’m on a shorts roll lately! When we released Falconer back in March of this year, I knew it would make a great pattern for summer shorts, too! We included two different leg options with Falconer and the instructions were complex enough already, so we opted not to include a shorts view, but fear not! Making shorts using this pattern is easy breezy!

We made my Falconer shorts out of everyday linen from Blackbird Fabrics. I love this ‘espresso’ colour! We have also made full pants out of this fabric and you can see those here. I wear these pants a lot because they are comfy, breezy, and they get loose as the day goes on, so they just get comfier and comfier!

We made these shorts a half size smaller than my measurements because I knew the linen was going to grow and stretch with wear. I wanted them to be snug when I first put them on and then loosen as the day went on.

To make Falconer Shorts, you simply need to mark the pattern at your desired length. Normally we would use the inseam measurement for this, but since Falconer has a side panel, you also need to measure to make sure you are getting that side panel the right length. I like to measure up from the hem to make sure they are matching up. I chose a 4” (10 cm) inseam on my shorts. Be sure to consider the side pocket placement when you are marking your new cut line. You can always shorten the side pocket to get a shorter inseam if desired.

Once you have marked the inseam you want, you then need to add the hem allowance. I wanted a 1 ½” (3.8 cm) finished hem so I lengthened my shorts 1 ¾” (4.5 cm). That way I could press the hem under ¼” (0.6 cm) and then 1 ½” (3.8 cm).

Falconer comes with a wide leg view and a barrel leg view. Both work for this hack! The patterns are pretty much the same until lower down the leg so you don’t need to worry too much about that, unless you are making longer shorts/jorts. In that case, it is easier to use the wide leg view.

I love these cute new summer shorts! I think the brown colour is classic and it is making me think of camp counselors. I could see this paired with a cute button up shirt and a ball cap. I’ve styled it here with our Slocan Tank. This is one of my favourite tops and it gets a ton of wear!

I wanted to take some pics of it right when I put them on and a couple pics after a few hours of wearing. Linen wrinkles and grows so I wanted to show you how they look when worn. I sat at my desk and walked my dog and then took these pics. I still love the worn-in look!
