Pattern Details
The Spindrift Jacket is perfect for everyday layering. This pattern has a relaxed fit with a dropped shoulder and the details of a denim jacket or chore coat. Three length options are provided, each with their own pocket designs and the ability to choose between a collar or a hood.
The longer length jacket (view A) features welt pockets and a scooped hem. Views B and C have patch pockets and a straight hem with optional back tabs. All views of Spindrift are unlined. This pattern is a fun project with lots of nice details and tons of options.
Spindrift comes in sizes 0-34 (33” - 62” hip). It is drafted to have a loose, boxy fit and it does not have bust darts or bust shaping. Spindrift is designed to be gender inclusive, and a chest dart can be added if needed. See our blog post on adding a dart to our Cameron Button Up.
Spindrift offers the option to do one or two lines of topstitching depending on the look you are going for. You can choose to use contrasting topstitching thread or matching thread. We love the look of the two lines of contrasting stitching on our denim samples.
Fabric Recommendations
Medium to heavy weight woven fabrics with no stretch. Denim, cotton or linen twill, corduroy, canvas, jacquard, and wool are all great options. Cotton flannel also works well for a lighter weight jacket.
If you are newer to sewing, I would recommend a 6-8oz cotton twill or canvas. Cotton flannel is also a good option, but keep in mind that if you are working with a plaid you may want to take extra care to pattern match. A solid colour is easiest to work with.
If you feel up for a fabric challenge, you could try a sherpa lined denim, a wool coating or, or a thicker corduroy.
Sewing Spindrift
Spindrift is rated “intermediate”. It is just a smidge outside the “advanced beginner” category because it has so many different options to choose from and quite a few details. The cropped length is the easiest because it does not have lower patch pockets. The longer length is the most challenging because it has welt pockets.
When sewing Spindrift, you will get experience with different pocket styles, topstitching, and sewing a unique sleeve shape and sleeve placket. View B and C also feature back tabs which may be a new technique for some sewists.
I find this pattern to be really fun and satisfying to make. It’s also just so wearable so it really pays off!
Why I Love Spindrift
I’m always excited to bring new designs into our collection. By the time the patterns get to the launch date, I have spent so much time with them that I feel like I know them intimately. From sewing samples to test wearing them non stop, I really develop an appreciation for the pattern and I’m always so excited to share what I love about the design.
- It’s fun to sew. Spindrift offers a variety of different techniques and keeps you on your toes! It is just challenging enough to give you that awesome sense of accomplishment without being so hard that you feel worn out by the end.
- It’s the perfect layering piece. Here on Vancouver Island the weather is mostly cool and we have a lot of months of the year where a light jacket is all you need. I love that Spindrift has me covered (literally) whether I need a flannel shacket, a denim jacket, or a cute cropped layer. It also fits a hoodie underneath without feeling tight, which is a real win when you need a little extra warmth!
- It offers so many options. When we were developing Spindrift it only had a collar. Then my cousin’s partner tried it on in my studio one day and said - “does this have a hood option?” I immediately jumped on the idea and added the hood and I’m so glad I did! With so many length options, pocket variations, and the ability to make a collar or hood - Spindrift has so much to offer.
- It works in a variety of fabrics. One of my favourite parts of pattern development is figuring out which fabrics will work for the design. There are the obvious ones and then there are the experiments. I am so happy to say that Spindrift works in so many fabrics! I can’t wait to try making it in a raincoat fabric and a sherpa lined denim. I would also love to try it in a fancy brocade!
- I can make it for loved ones. I love a pattern that I can sew for myself and for Sam. It’s great to be able to make use of one design for both of us! We both love our Cameron Button Ups and Jackson Tees and now we have Spindrift to layer over top!
- It has pockets! This one is a no-brainer. There are patch pockets, pockets with flaps, AND welt pockets in this pattern. It is a choose your own adventure style pattern where you can opt to sew whichever pockets you like!
I can’t wait to see what you make with Spindrift! This one is a timeless classic that will be an excellent wardrobe workhorse for yourself and others for years to come.
