Can you believe it’s already been 4 years since we launched the Sam Apron!? I was shocked by this because, in my mind, it had only been 2. When I looked back to find that we launched it in 2021 I did a double take! It feels like just yesterday I was sewing up the samples for me and Sam, aprons that we both still wear every single day!

Because we wear our Sam Aprons every day, they have been getting a bit worn out. Sam’s is especially well loved and a few months ago he showed me that he has actually worn a hole into a particular spot on the apron - the spot where he always wipes the fingers on his right hand. I was amazed! This little area was so worn out that it was shredding! It can (and will) be mended, but it got me thinking that it might be time to make him a nice crisp new apron, and that it would be the perfect Christmas present!

I decided to make this new apron even more durable. His last one was made in a coloured denim, I think the weight was about 10oz. This time I used a 14oz duck canvas and it feels so heavy duty! It is a little stiff but it will soften with washing and wearing, which it will get a ton of.

Because of the finger-wiping situation. I decided to add some extra strength in this area by layering another piece of duck canvas between the apron and the pocket. I just cut a square of fabric, pressed under all the edges, and sewed it in place where the hole was on the old one. It’s going to take a decade to wear through this one!

I happened to have this black and tan duck canvas in my stash so it felt like a perfect pairing. These are classic apron colours and Sam is a fan of the look. It feels very cool and kinda hardcore! Let’s be honest, cooking is pretty hardcore after all. I used the tan colour for the accents and I love how it turned out!

The only embellishment I added was to sew a little label under the front pocket. I used a quilt block label from Sarah Hearts. I love this little pop of cream and the quilt block makes it feel like a personal love note from me to him.

Sam loves his new apron and he deserves it so much. He cooks nearly all of our meals and is so generous with cooking for friends and family, too. There is a reason I named the pattern after him! He is the best chef I know. <3
