One of my favourite parts about sewing is choosing the fabric! Fabric choice can make or break a project, and it can completely transform the garment. For example, the Cameron Button Up works so well in cottons and flannels—classic shirt fabrics. I’ve sewn it up here in a rayon print and it has a totally different vibe! Suddenly it looks more like a button up blouse than a shirt and the drapey structure of the fabric feels relaxed and effortlessly cool. I love the way this shirt turned out and it has increased the versatility of this pattern for me.
I used a print from the Blackbird Fabrics custom print collection—I believe this one is called Lounging Leopards. It is not available anymore but they often have really cool prints like this one so keep your eyes open! This print is on Ecovero challis.
I used classic black buttons for this shirt and managed to make an error on the sleeve and put the buttonholes on the wrong side of the cuff. You may remember I made a similar error on my short sleeve Cameron Button Up 🤦♀️. This time, I chose to simply put the button on the inside of the shirt, which you don’t notice at all thanks to the busy print. It almost gives the cuffs and invisible-button vibe—kinda cool!
I like to wear this shirt untucked, tucked in, or French tucked! It looks great all ways and that makes it a great piece for my wardrobe. I feel quite cool in this top, too, so I end up choosing it for drinks with friends or other social occasions. I think it could work great in a professional setting, too! I even wore this shirt out to dinner with Sam for my birthday the other day.
I wanted to highlight these cool earrings too! These are from my favorite jewelry designer, Scandinazn. I just love how Jamie plays with shape, colour, and texture in her work, most of which is made from recycled/upcycled leather! So cool! I own several pairs of her earrings and love them all.
