In case you missed it, this week is the one year anniversary of the Spindrift Jacket! This jacket has become a real staple in both mine and Sam’s wardrobes. We both wear our denim versions all the time because they are the perfect weight and can fit cozy sweaters or flannel shirts underneath for extra warmth. I decided to make myself a second hip-length version in a leopard print cotton twill!

You may recognize this leopard print twill from my recent Falconer Pants make. I love these pants and I got more of this fabric with a jacket in mind. I also kind of want to make a vest to match, too! It is such a great leopard print. It’s a custom print from Blackbird Fabrics.

The only downside to this digitally printed fabric is that the wrong side of the fabric is white. It’s not an issue with pants but with an unlined jacket, I didn’t like the idea of a white interior. I decided to underline the jacket to hide the white and it has the added benefit of making it a little bit warmer! Ideal as we head into colder months ahead.

I have to give credit to my friend Morgan for this idea because she lined a Wildwood Jacket with this fun and silly skeleton/american tattoo art style print. It has lots of weird car/garage related vignettes to look at! I loved how it looked on her jacket and so I got some for myself and it goes with the leopard print so well!

To underline the jacket, I simply cut the main body pieces out of the lining (front, back, sleeves). I still did both the yokes in the outer fabric, as well as the collar, cuffs, front facings and pockets. I layered the fabrics together and sewed the pockets on through both layers. Both prints are busy so you don’t even really notice the stitching on the lining.

To make things easier, you can sew around the outer edge of all the pieces to make the two fabrics act as one, but I found that these cottons stuck together pretty well so I didn’t need to bother, I just used a few pins to keep things from slipping. Since you are treating the fabrics as one, you will still have exposed seams on the inside of the jacket at the side seams and sleeve attachment seams. One of my favourite things about Spindrift is how all of the other seams are neatly tucked away and topstitched.

One little trick that I did was I cut the sleeve underlining upside down. I did this so that when I cuff my sleeves (which I like to do when wearing this jacket), the print is right side up! I also placed each of the dancing ladies at the hem of the sleeves so that they would show. I love it!

I made view B of Spindrift (the classic hip-length view), but you can underline any of the views using this same method. It would be a great way to add extra warmth to a longer flannel Spindrift!

I’m wearing this jacket with my beloved black Yanta Overalls, which are wearing so nicely. I love how you can see the pocket edges more now! I had to snap a fun pic with our Halloween skeleton (which does stay up until Christmas)!

I am so in love with this jacket! The outer fabric is fun but the lining is EVERYTHING! I even remembered to put a label in this one and it could not be more perfect. I love when projects come together so well! I know I am going to wear this all the time because my red denim Spindrift gets so much use. I can’t wait to rock my head to toe denim ensemble, too!
