Love to Sew - We Sew The Good Fabric

Love to Sew Podcast - Heather Blazer - Helen's Closet Patterns Blog

Our Love to Sew Podcast episode this week is all about sewing the “Good Fabric”. What is the good fabric? Is it the fabric you spent the most money on? The one you got on holiday? The one that was passed down to you from your grandmother? We explore the concept of the “good fabric” and why sewists are always so hesitant to use it! We both chose our most precious fabrics and FINALLY made something with them.

Head over to the Love to Sew Podcast website to listen to the episode!

My “good fabric” is this curtain I got at a thrift store. It wasn’t expensive (only $12.99), and it isn't sentimental. But it is gorgeous, and I’ve always dreamed about making it up into a beautiful jacket but I felt very scared to cut it up. This piece is one of a kind! And how do I sew it up without messing it up!? This kind of thinking has prevented me from sewing this jacket for about 8 years. I’m so glad I finally had the push I needed to sew the good fabric!

I used the Heather Blazer from Friday Pattern Co. for my jacket and I chose this pattern because I liked the collar shape and how simple the design is. I didn’t want anything that would break up the pattern on the fabric too much and I was nervous about this fabric fraying. Minimal seam lines and details were ideal, and it was just an extra bonus that made it an easy project to sew! It does have a lining which is also great because this fabric is a bit scratchy.

I did have a hard time choosing which size of the fabric to use for my project because both sides of this jacquard are so pretty, but ultimately I ended up going with the gold lily side (the right side). I did put the wrong side of the fabric on the undercollar so that I can still see and remember how pretty it is!

I also had fun choosing this rich burgundy fabric for the lining and this gold button for the closure in the front. I never get to use these fun novelty buttons! The lining is rayon bemburg and it is so soft and slippery. It makes the blazer feel really luxurious!

I really enjoyed making this project! Placing the gold lilies on the lapel and collar was my favourite part. I think it looks so awesome. I’m very glad that I decided to finally take the plunge and make something out of this fabric. No regrets!
